I am honored and delighted to welcome you to the 2026 FISU World University Championship Mind Sports! This event, co-hosted by the China Student Sports Federation and the People’s Government of Liaocheng City, stands as a testament to our unwavering commitment to the spirit of mind sports, innovation, and the pursuit of excellence.
As the Party Secretary of the CPC Liaocheng Municipal Committee, I am delighted to witness university athletes from around the world gather in this historic yet vibrant city. Your presence not only brings intellectual vitality, but also showcases the distinctive appeal of cultural integration and a shared spirit as embodied by mind sports.

2026 FISU World University Championship Mind Sports
Explore time‑honored landscapes of Liaocheng: wander around Dongchang Ancient City by Dongchang Lake, trace the grand Beijing‑Hangzhou Grand Canal. Taste local delicacies including Shazhen Guada, Gaotang Tofu Pudding, Wei’s Smoked Chicken and Linqing Shixiang Noodles.
Jiang Tianyu Cheers for the Games
Jiang Tianyu, a member of the Chinese National Chess Team and a chess player from Liaocheng, cheers for the 2026 FISU World University Championship Mind Sports! From October 11 to 16, the event will be held in Liaocheng, China.
Known as the “Home of Chess”, Liaocheng received the FISU flag in 2024 and secured the hosting rights. With over two decades of development, more than 300 schools across the city have launched chess courses, and the city boasts over 400,000 enthusiasts.
Liaocheng opens its arms to welcome friends from all over the world to this grand gathering, to experience the unique charm of the city.

Mind Sports in the Water City – Connecting the World · Invitation to Series of Cultural Experience Activities
To help student-athletes from across the globe gain insights into Liaocheng’s Grand Canal cultural heritage and experience the local customs of Shandong Province, the 2026 FISU WORLD UNIVERSITY CHAMPIONSHIP MIND SPORTS has prepared a host of immersive cultural-experience events. Blending mind sports, intangible cultural heritage craftsmanship, ancient-city charm and Grand-Canal cuisine, these activities welcome athletes and guests of all delegations to participate. Beyond intense competitions, discover the millennia-old glamour of the Water City North of the Yangtze River.
I. Mind Sports Carnival · Intangible Cultural Heritage & Cultural-Creativity Zone
Time: October 10-16, 16:00-21:00 daily
Venue: Fore-plaza, Competition Building, Arcadia International Hot Spring Hotel Liaocheng
The timeless Grand Canal has nurtured a rich array of Liaocheng’s intangible cultural heritage. This zone creatively integrates mind sports with local folk traditions. Visitors may enjoy live demonstrations of Dongchang gourd carving, paper-cutting, sugar painting and other handicrafts, and even try them hands-on. You may also sample authentic Linqing local delicacies and savour the unique culinary flavours along the Grand Canal.
Chess-related books, specialized chess sets and official event cultural-creative souvenirs are on display and available for purchase. Interactive mind sports experiences including human-versus-AI chess matches are arranged for friendly contests. Interactive booths from event sponsors further enrich on-site experiences.
II. Liaocheng Glow Night Run
Time: 19:00-20:30, October 10
Race Route: Arcadia International Hot Spring Hotel (Start & Finish) — Hubin West Road — Hubin Road — Xiguan Street — West City Wall Road — South City Wall Road — Nanguan Bridge — Longdi West Lakeside Road — Nanguan Street — South Hubin Road — Hubin West Road — Arcadia International Hot Spring Hotel (Start & Finish).
Scale: Total 900 participants, split into two groups of 450 each. Open to delegation members and local citizens of Liaocheng.
As night falls and city lights glow, run along Dongchang Lake. Admire the night scenery of the Ancient Water City and the magnificent Guangyue Tower built in the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty. Unleash your energy in this 5-km glow night run. Trace the night-time charm of the Water City with your footsteps and strengthen youth-to-youth bonds among international participants.
Registration: Delegation members may sign up during athlete check-in & registration.
III. The Ancient Water City Check-in Activity
Exclusive Session for Athletes: 18:00-20:00, October 13-14; open to public during daytime hours.
Venue: The Ancient Water City (Dongchangfu District)
The Ancient Water City is a thousand-year-old prefectural city “floating on water”, thriving on the Grand Canal’s grain-transport trade. Numerous historical sites scatter across its lanes. This activity embeds chess- and bridge-sport themes across five key locations in the ancient town. Take a stroll through brick-paved alleys, explore heritage sites and join fun mind-sport interactive games.
Five Check-in Points
1. Haiyuan Pavilion: One of the four great private libraries of the Qing Dynasty and an icon of northern Chinese book-collecting culture, once housing over 220,000 volumes. It bears witness to the scholarly prosperity fostered by the Grand Canal. An interactive chess endgame challenge is available on-site.
2. Central and Eastern European Countries Specialty Products Pavilion: An important platform for Liaocheng’s international friendship exchanges. It showcases featured goods from Central and Eastern European countries and serves as a venue for cross-cultural communication and youth interaction.
3. Guangyue Tower: Erected in the 7th year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty. Praised as comparable to Yellow Crane Tower and Yueyang Tower, it ranks among China’s largest and best-preserved ancient timber-frame multi-storey buildings and is a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level, as well as the landmark of the ancient city.
4. Liaocheng Gifts: Showcases a wide selection of local intangible-cultural-heritage souvenirs and city-themed gifts, presenting exquisite craftsmanship from the Ancient Water City.
5. County Office: The former administrative seat of ancient Dongchang Prefecture. A large-scale outdoor chess set is installed here for fun quiz-and-answer interactions.
How to Participate
1. Reservation: Visit the reception centre at Arcadia International Hot Spring Hotel to make a reservation. On-site registration is also accepted.
2. Stamp Collection: Collect your check-in card at the Intangible-Cultural-Heritage Exhibition Area in Arcadia International Hot Spring Hotel. Complete interactive tasks at all five points to collect stamps. After gathering all five stamps, return to the Intangible-Cultural-Heritage Exhibition Area to redeem official event souvenirs and ancient-city cultural-creative gifts.
Shuttle-bus Service: Loop shuttle buses run between the hotel and the ancient city from 18:00-20:00 on October 13-14 for delegation athletes.
Reminder: General tourists may visit and collect stamps from 10:00-18:00 daily. Delegation athletes shall join the exclusive 18:00-20:00 athlete session via scheduled shuttle buses.
IV. Culture Day | Linqing Dongwanyuan Food Carnival
Time: 16:00-21:00, October 15
Venue: Dongwanyuan Scenic Area, Linqing City
Linqing was a vital commercial hub on the Grand Canal. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, merchants gathered here, enabling integration of northern and southern cultures. Dongwanyuan reproduces the streetscape of that prosperous age, featuring elegant pavilions, waterside terraces and classic northern-Chinese-garden layouts. Immerse yourself in the heritage of this canal city: tour the garden, watch live performances and taste authentic canal-region food.
Enjoy spectacular live shows including Drum & Light Fantasy Show, grand interactive parade Grand Canal Wedding Celebration, and the intangible-cultural-heritage molten-iron firework performance. After dark, the scenic area glows with brilliant lights. At the Canal Intangible-Cultural-Heritage Museum, watch masters demonstrate gourd carving, paper-cutting and sugar painting.
Savour renowned Linqing local food: flavourful Linqing Eight Bowls, Shixiang Noodles, Shaomai and other delicacies passed down from the Grand-Canal trading era.
Reservation: Please register at the Arcadia International Hot Spring Hotel Reception Centre before 18:00, October 14.
Shuttle-bus Arrangement:
1. Departure: 16:00, October 15, departure from Arcadia International Hot Spring Hotel; arrival at Dongwanyuan by 17:30.
2. Return: Assemble for departure at the exit of Dongwanyuan Scenic Area at 19:30; estimated arrival back at the hotel: 21:00.
Important Notices
– These activities are open to competing athletes, technical officials and guests of delegations; selected activities admit local citizens as well.
– Reservations at the hotel reception centre are mandatory for the Ancient-Water-City Check-in and Dongwanyuan Food Carnival. Shuttle-bus transport is provided. Please do not travel independently.
– Follow instructions from on-site staff and volunteers. Visit respectfully and observe local folk customs.
